Getting the best-sized image for quality
We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more if possible. Digital files should be saved as a JPEG. Each image should be a minimum of 1600 pixels along its longest length. The image file size should be 1MB (megabytes) or over. Generally those measured in KB (kilobytes) only will be too small. With most digital point-and-shoot cameras, you can choose the resolution - how big the image can print without blurring. You do this by entering the shooting menu and selecting the 'Image Size' or 'Resolution' option. When you do that, you'll see a series of number pairs such as these, from highest to lowest resolution:
- » 2048 x 1536
- » 1600 x 1200
- » 1280 x 960
- » 1024 x 768
- » 640 x 480
Image size and Megapixels
The resolution of digital cameras is measured in megapixels. The more pixels a camera has the better the quality of its photographs. If you lower the resolution or the image (or picture) quality level (different cameras have different names for the same thing) the camera doesn’t use all its individual pixels; instead, it bunches the smaller pixels into bigger ones, perhaps using four to make one. This means the camera can fit more pictures of a lower quality on a memory card. So, to take higher resolution or quality images it pays to get a bigger memory card, or two.
